Functional Training equipment and techniques

Functional Training is the collection of activities that I use to help people get in my Performance programme, and my Fit for Life programme. It’s all about helping you function effectively in your daily life. This could be about helping you walk or run better, regain mobility or balance; it could be to help you get back to work after an injury; or it could be to help build your fitness, flexibility, strength and agility to help you excel in your chosen sport. I design programmes which use planned and varied functional activities fitting your needs and abilities to achieve your personal health and fitness goals. We will start with a full assessment of your current situation, and I’ll devise a plan which will gradually achieve your goals.

Our work together can take place anywhere – at your own home, outside in the open air or at my base. Below are just a few of the tools and exercises I use, but there are hundreds of things we can do to get you where you want to be!

TRX

TRX

The TRX is a great piece of equipment developed by the US Navy for exercising at sea. It works by using your (suspended) body weight, doing away with heavy and equipment gym machinery. Another benefit over gym equipment is that the TRX works whole muscle chains rather than discrete muscle groups. It can be used anywhere – in the home, in a gym, and in the great outdoors.

The Swiss Ball is a versatile piece of equipment that helps people with all levels of fitness.

It is good for developing strength, balance and flexibility, and is also good as an alternative to an office chair to encourage the sitter to be move around more when working at a computer, for instance.

Gait and Posture realignment

Walking is a great exercise for many people. We will start with me observing you walk (your gait). Often there are simple things we can do to correct poor walking gait (or posture) and these simple corrective measures will have a direct effect on some long-term mobility problems. In our sessions I will help you with exercises that I will encourage you to use in your own time – thus accelerating your progress overall.
